How to Install Crochet Braids: A Step-by-Step Guide

What Are Crochet Braids?
Crochet braids are a protective style where pre-looped hair extensions are attached to your cornrowed natural hair using a latch hook or crochet needle. The result is a full, textured look that's gentle on your edges and incredibly versatile.
What You'll Need
- Crochet needle/latch hook
- Rat-tail comb and wide-tooth comb
- Edge control or braid gel
- Hair ties or clips
- Your chosen crochet extension hair. We recommend our Water Wave Crochet, Spanish Curl Crochet, or Hawaiian Curl Crochet for a premium, natural-looking finish
Step 1: Prep Your Natural Hair
Start with clean, moisturised hair. Detangle thoroughly and apply a lightweight leave-in conditioner. Let your hair dry completely before braiding — installing on damp hair can lead to mildew build-up under the extensions.
Step 2: Cornrow Your Base
Create your cornrow pattern depending on the style you want. For a middle-part bob or curly style, a straight-back or curved cornrow pattern works well. Keep braids tight but not scalp-straining — you'll be wearing this for 4–8 weeks. Use braid gel or edge control to keep flyaways smooth.
Tip: The number of cornrows determines the fullness of your style. More rows = more volume.
Step 3: Section and Prepare Your Extensions
Remove your extensions from the packaging and separate them into individual strands. Fold each strand in half to create a loop — this is the part that attaches to the cornrow.
Step 4: Attach the Extensions
- Insert your crochet needle under a cornrow (not through your scalp).
- Open the latch and hook the folded loop of the extension strand.
- Pull the loop through the cornrow.
- Thread the ends of the extension through the loop and pull snug to secure.
- Repeat along each cornrow, spacing extensions evenly for full coverage.
Step 5: Style and Finish
Once all extensions are attached, style as desired. Shake out curls, define with a curl activator or light mousse, and use a diffuser if needed. Tie down your edges with a silk scarf overnight to lay them flat.
How Long Do Crochet Braids Last?
With proper care, crochet braids can last 4–8 weeks. Refresh your style with a light oil spray and re-wrap nightly to maintain the look.
