How to Wash and Maintain Braided Extensions

Can You Wash Braided Extensions?
Yes — and you should. Washing your braids every 1–2 weeks removes scalp build-up, sweat, and product residue that can irritate the skin and weaken your natural hair underneath. The key is technique: too aggressive and you'll cause frizz and tangling; too gentle and your scalp won't get properly clean.
Before You Wash: What You'll Need
- Sulphate-free or clarifying shampoo
- Lightweight conditioner
- A spray bottle or applicator bottle
- A microfibre towel
- Scalp oil or braid spray
Step-by-Step Wash Routine
- Dilute your shampoo. Mix shampoo with water in an applicator or spray bottle — roughly 1 part shampoo to 3 parts water. This lets you apply it directly to the scalp without saturating the extensions.
- Apply to the scalp in sections. Part your braids and squeeze or spray the diluted shampoo along each section of your scalp. Work in small sections to ensure full coverage.
- Massage gently. Use the pads of your fingertips (not your nails) to massage your scalp in circular motions. Avoid scrubbing the braid extensions themselves — the friction causes frizz.
- Rinse thoroughly. Let water run from root to tip in a downward direction. Hold braids together in groups to prevent tangling during the rinse.
- Apply conditioner to roots only. Avoid applying conditioner to the length of synthetic extensions as it can cause them to slip or look dull. For human hair extensions, a light conditioner can be applied throughout.
- Rinse again and gently squeeze out excess water. Do not wring or rub the braids.
- Pat dry with a microfibre towel. Then allow braids to air dry fully, or sit under a hooded dryer. Never sleep on damp braids.
Ongoing Maintenance Between Washes
Keeping your braids looking fresh between wash days is about consistency:
- Scalp oil every 2–3 days: Apply a lightweight oil (jojoba, peppermint, or tea tree) directly to your scalp using the tip of an applicator bottle. This prevents dryness and flaking.
- Braid refresher spray: A light spritz of a braid refresher or diluted rosewater gives extensions a boost and reduces dullness mid-week.
- Edge care: Apply edge control along your hairline every 2–3 days and smooth with a soft bristle brush.
- Night routine: Wrap or pineapple your braids every night and sleep on a satin pillowcase or with a satin bonnet. This single habit can double the life of your style.
Managing Frizz and Flyaways
Frizz is inevitable over time but can be managed:
- Apply a tiny amount of hair serum or mousse to frizzy sections and smooth with your hands.
- For synthetic braids, dipping frizzy sections briefly in hot water then reshaping can restore their original look.
- Use a small bristle brush or toothbrush to smooth out flyaways at the root without disturbing the rest of the braid.
When to Remove Your Braided Extensions
Most braided extension styles are designed to be worn for 4–8 weeks. After that, new growth starts to place tension on the roots and the style loses its structure. Leaving them in too long risks matting, which can cause unnecessary breakage when removing.
