X-pression Ultra Braids Install Guide: Everything You Need to Know

Why X-pression Ultra Braids?

X-pression Ultra Braids are one of the most popular braiding hair brands in the world; and for good reason. They're ultra-lightweight, tangle-resistant, and available in an enormous range of colours, from natural tones to bold vivids. Whether you're doing box braids, Senegalese twists, or goddess braids, X-pression delivers consistent results.

How Many Packs Do You Need?

The number of packs depends on the size and length of your braids:

  • Micro/small braids: 2–3 packs
  • Medium box braids: 3–4 packs
  • Large braids: 3–5 packs
  • Jumbo braids: 4–5 packs

When in doubt, buy an extra pack — running out mid-install with mismatched dye lots is a common frustration.

What You'll Need

  • X-pression Ultra Braids in your chosen colour
  • Rat-tail comb for clean partings
  • Edge control or braid gel
  • Hair clips or rubber bands (optional, for sectioning)
  • Scissors and a lighter (for sealing ends)
  • A bowl of hot water (for dipping)

Step 1: Prep Your Natural Hair

Start with clean, stretched hair for easier braiding. Blow-dry on a low heat setting or braid your hair while damp and let it dry overnight. Apply a light leave-in conditioner and edge control to keep the roots smooth.

Step 2: Prep the Braiding Hair

Take each pack of X-pression and unfold. Separate into sections based on the desired braid thickness — one fold typically makes 1–2 medium braids. Keep sections consistent for even-looking results throughout.

Step 3: Create Clean Partings

Use your rat-tail comb to create neat, even parts in your natural hair. The parting pattern (straight back, box, triangle, or diagonal) determines the final look of the style. Take your time here — clean parts make a significant difference in the finished result.

Step 4: Braid

  1. Take a section of your natural hair at the root of the part.
  2. Fold a piece of X-pression in half and loop it around the root of your natural hair.
  3. Begin braiding your natural hair together with both sides of the extension for the first 3–5 plaits (this is the feed-in technique that creates a natural root).
  4. Once you've secured the root, continue braiding all three strands (natural hair incorporated) straight down to the desired length.
  5. Seal the end with a dip in hot water or carefully pass a lighter around the tip to prevent unravelling.

Step 5: Finishing the Style

Once all braids are complete, dip the ends in hot water to seal and add a slight curl if desired. Lay your edges with edge control and a scarf for 10–15 minutes for a polished finish. Rub a small amount of oil shine spray along the braids for a healthy sheen.

How Long Do They Last?

X-pression braids typically last 6–8 weeks with proper care. Wrap nightly in a satin scarf or bonnet, keep the scalp moisturised, and wash gently every 1–2 weeks.
